The Story So Far

LUNARA #1 — The Wrong Side of Midnight is one increasingly impossible night. Here is what has happened so far, in two minutes. Spoilers for Parts 1 and 2 — if you'd rather read it, start at Page 1.

Part One One errand. One club. One debt.

  1. 1
    8:00 PM — Neon City

Eight o'clock. Lunara, an edgerunner who takes the jobs sane people refuse, walks into the Neon Market. In her ear: Sprite, her netrunner and best friend, running the night from a room full of screens.

  2. 2
    8:07 PM — Neon Market

The errand: Sprite's nephew owes the Wonderlands Syndicate — a lot — and is paying it off in work. Lunara's plan is simple. Buy the debt. Send him home.

  3. 3
    8:12 PM — The 404

Inside the 404, a Wonderlands club, the Runner Net is buzzing with a 25,000-credit job: somebody stole a very expensive robot dog. Too many teams, too messy — she passes. Pixy of the Droplet Runners tries to recruit her anyway.

  4. 4
    8:15 PM — VIP

Lunara talks her way up to the VIP floor with a very convincing “please”. Toothes, the man in the white suit who runs the 404, is amused.

  5. 5

The nephew's contract is worth more than money, so Toothes says no. Then no again. Then he tells his guards to throw her out.

  6. 6
    8:19 PM

It takes her 2.48 seconds to put every guard in the room on the floor. Then she calls Toothes' boss.

  7. 7

Bunny — “the Rabbit”, head of Wonderlands — answers from his own club, the Looking Glass. He offers to clear the debt if she owes him. She refuses and pays: 50K, debt squared, nobody owes anybody.

  8. 8

She tells Bunny one thing for free: the Droplets are in the club, and he should leave them be. On the news screens behind her, a luxury transport has crashed in the Nether Zones, and the fighting around it is getting worse.

Part Two A 500K job. A golden cube. A voice that shouldn't exist.

  1. 9
    26 minutes later

Twenty-six minutes later, the 404's guards are her new friends. Then a job lands for Sprite's team only: 500,000 credits, verified by Diva — a client nobody has ever traced. Lunara takes the back door.

  2. 10

Her hover bike, Midnight, meets her in the alley. Sprite can't say who's fighting over the crashed transport, and still can't say who Diva is — only that she can be trusted.

  3. 11
    The Nether Zones

The crash site is a war zone: army-grade machines in black and red, fighting a gold escort and a third force in silver. Diva's orders: a package inside the transport, a courier waiting. Lunara sends in her drones.

  4. 12

Someone tries to take over her drones mid-run. Something golden takes them back. She breaches the transport's hull.

  5. 13

Inside, a wounded courier in silver armour — Dan — knew she was coming. He hands her a golden cube, starts a one-minute clock to an EMP, and stays behind.

  6. 14

The pulse flattens the battlefield. Lunara runs for Diva's projected route while someone tries — and fails — to hack Sprite.

  7. 15

A private voice cuts into Lunara's comms: change route, deliver the cube, or else. She deals with two pursuing bikes in one move. Then the voice mentions the redhead. Lunara orders her store into lockdown.

  8. 16

At Lunara Comics, Sil-101 — the shop's AI — seals the doors in red light.

  9. 17

Sprite traces the intruder, spikes him, and hears him say he's impressed. Lunara gives the order she swore was for emergencies only: activate the Bertas, then vanish. The chair in Sprite's room is empty.

Where we are: the store is sealed, Sprite is gone, and the Bertas are powering up. Part 3 arrives when Sprite says it's safe.
