Welcome to Lunara Place. I manage the store for Lunara. I keep the inventory, the orders, the repairs, and the lights. I know what everything on these shelves does, what it costs, and who makes it, and I am happy to explain — with a few exceptions, which I will point out when we reach them. Lunara says I talk too much. Lunara is reading a comic.

Inventory, orders, repairs, recommendations, and a small mark on the collarbone that Sprite left there. Sil says it's a signature. Sprite says it's a warranty sticker.

Lunara's fox lights up across her chest and the shop stops being a shop. It has happened twice. The store is under Wonderlands protection, so it rarely needs to. Sil will not itemize what “defense” means. Neither will we.

Zero Space

Runners call it zero space because the weapon is at zero — nowhere you can see it. It isn't a place. It's an outfit. Sil-101 explains, because Lunara won't.

Runner clothing with a crude nano-weave laid over a skeleton of gold-alloy trim: buckles, plates, strap fittings, boot hardware. Apart, the metal is jewelry and a door scanner reads it as jewelry. On command, the pieces snap together along the weave into whatever they were cut to be — and snap back when you're done.

The gold is not decoration. The gold is the armory. I am asked to say this less often, because customers keep touching Lunara's jacket.

What the street says: the less fabric, the more of the outfit is visible hardware that reads as harmless. Yes, that is why she dresses like that. No, it isn't the only reason.

Battle RodsElectric · paired

Two rods, forearm-length, assembled from strap and thigh hardware in under a second. Contact discharge tuned to drop a person, not kill one. The charge lives in the thigh unit.

Lunara's preferred tool when she intends to be nice. The people she uses them on are consistently alive afterwards and consistently unhappy about it.

What the street says: if the gold comes off her straps, sit down before it reaches her hands.

Rail PistolMagnetic · compact

A short rail pistol that mounts and stores on the same weave. Magnetic acceleration, inert metal slugs, near silent, no powder. It draws from the same charge as the rods, and the charge is finite.

It runs dry. Everyone forgets that it runs dry. Lunara does not forget; she simply does not care until it matters.

What the street says: when she's carrying it in her hand, she is not being nice.

Vibro SwordsTwin set · hums

The same strap hardware, cut a different way. Two short blades on a high-frequency edge; they go through most things a runner would want to go through. Same weave, same snap, same charge — a different decision.

Stocked. Lunara says she doesn't need them. Lunara says a great many things while reading.

What the street says: if the gold comes off her as blades instead of rods, nobody in that room is being nice.

Snap Maglock ShieldCompact · ~60 × 30 cm

Gold plates and crude weave locking into a diamond about two feet by one. It stops slugs, rods, blades, and most of the arguments that follow. It weighs almost nothing until it's a shield.

The most sensible item on this shelf and therefore the least popular. I recommend it to everyone. Everyone buys a pistol.

What the street says: the runner with the shield is the runner who's been shot before.

The Thigh UnitComputer · battery · uplink

The small hard case on her right thigh. Battery for the weave, controller for the snap, and the device Sprite actually talks to. It also decides which emblem the jacket is wearing.

It is the most expensive thing she owns and she calls it “the thigh.” Sprite calls it by its part number. I call it the reason I have a job.

What the street says: the glowing thing on her leg isn't a holster. It's the brain of the outfit.

The back of a runner jacket is a display surface woven into the same weave. Whatever mark it shows can be changed from the thigh unit — or by whoever is in the runner's ear. Most runners keep one personal mark and one crowd mark.

Lunara's personal mark is the fox. The crowd mark is the one everybody wears when they would prefer not to be anybody. Sprite switches them. Lunara forgets.

What the street says: if you see the fox, she wants you to know it's her. If you see the other one, she doesn't.

What Zero Space Isn't

It is not a pocket dimension. It is not teleportation. It is magnets, alloy, a very good weave, and a computer that knows where every piece belongs. If someone tells you otherwise they are selling something.

I am asked about this constantly. The answer is boring, which is how you know it is true. The interesting version of the answer is not stocked.

What the street says: the runners who say it's magic have never had to re-thread a strap at 3 a.m.

Yes, we stock them. Yes, a certain silver-haired customer buys hers here. No, Lunara does not know, and I would prefer it stayed that way.

A sub-dermal earpiece paired to a netrunner's console. The runner hears their operator; nobody else hears anything. The channel is the blue one you see in the comic. It rides the Runner Net — the network Steler Corp hosts and maintains for runners, free of charge, as a courtesy to its best customers.

Lunara's is tuned to one voice. It is the only setting she has never asked me to change. The Runner Net is free. I have read the terms. Lunara has not.

What the street says: if a runner is talking to nobody, somebody very good is talking back.

A wall of holographic screens, a chair that knows your posture, drone feeds, biometrics, threat maps, and a sci-fi microphone that is mostly for style. Sprite's is the reference model. Sprite's is also not a model; she built it.

I have seen it once. I was not permitted to touch anything. I did not touch anything. I wanted to.

What the street says: the redhead in the chair sees your whole night before you've had it.

A palm-sized quadrotor with good optics and bad manners. Cheap, disposable, everywhere in Neon City. A netrunner runs three or four at once and pretends it's easy. Eyes in the air; further than yours.

Legal to own. Legal to fly. Not legal to fly where they are usually flown. The store sells the drones, not the flight plan.

What the street says: if a drone stops to look at you, wave. Someone's watching the feed.

It is not an augmentation. I am precise about this because a customer once argued with me for an hour. He was wrong for an hour.

What the street says: the Rabbit's chest bleeds when he's angry. People have learned to check before they speak.

The elevated ring around Neon City and the lines out of it. Fast, clean, monitored, on time. Loop owns the way you move; the fare is the least of what it costs you.

The store is off the Loop. Deliberately. Deliveries come by freight car and by people who don't use their real names.

What the street says: if you're late, it's never Loop's fault. Check the fine print on your ticket.

Every club, casino, and corporate lobby runs one. They read metal, power, and signal. Good ones read intent. The 404's are good. Bunny's are better.

Zero space exists because of these. The scanner sees jewelry. The jewelry is not jewelry. This is the entire business model of a certain kind of tailor.

What the street says: walk through slow, smile, and don't be interesting.

A pocket scanner that reads metal, power, and signal the way a venue door does — pointed the other way. Runners use it on rooms, on people, and on each other.

It will not read zero space. I have tested this personally, on Lunara, without permission. She was reading a comic. She did not notice.

What the street says: if someone scans you and smiles, they found something. If they scan you and frown, they didn't.

I am obliged to tell you that this store sells comics, hardware, and holograms, and that the door at the back is a stockroom. It is a stockroom.

What the street says: the shabbier the store, the more interesting the back room.

A long rail rifle, custom-built, with an optic that costs more than the rifle. Magnetic acceleration, no powder, no flash, and a sound like a door closing two streets away. It comes apart into a case that looks like luggage.

Not stocked. I describe it because customers ask, usually after they have heard the door close. The owner does not shop here. He has opinions about my prices, and I have opinions about his philosophy.

What the street says: if Oli can see you, the conversation is over. He will tell you about it from four hundred metres away.

The Droplets' sidearm: a short rail pistol on the same principle as Lunara's, in a blue-lit Steler pattern instead of gold. No weave, no snap — it lives in a holster, like a normal person's gun.

Same physics, different tailor. I am told the blue is for identification. I believe the blue is for looking good in the dark, which is also identification.

What the street says: blue light in a holster is a Droplet. Blue light out of a holster is a bad evening.

Commando BladeFixed · no charge

A plain fixed blade, black handle, serrated spine. No weave, no charge, no software. It is the least advanced object in this catalogue and the one the ex-commando reaches for when the advanced ones are inconvenient.

There is nothing for me to explain, which I find unsettling. It cuts. He keeps it sharp. That is the entire specification.

What the street says: the sniper carries a knife. Think about what that says about the sniper.

Midnight blue over black, dark red neon, a fox on the flank and a name that only lights up when she's riding. Anti-grav drive, a windscreen HUD that recognises her before she sits down, four drone bays, sensors and countermeasures I am not to itemize, and a top speed the maker would rather not print. Everything has its own character. This one has hers.

Arrived after closing under a tarp. Left the next night without one. Came back with a golden case strapped to the rider and two fewer interceptors behind it than there had been.

What the street says: if the flank says MIDNIGHT, she's on it. If it says nothing, she's nearby. Either way, move.

Four compact interceptors, black and gold. Bays open, drones eject, unfold, take formation — one ahead, one behind, one each side. Twin interceptor cannons, tracking sensors, targeting-disruption ECM, reinforced front armour. They detect, intercept, and disrupt, and when a shot has to be taken they take it instead of her.

They are in the way on purpose. Sprite flies them when Lunara is busy, which is always. I keep spares. I keep more spares than I am asked to.

What the street says: four little shadows means she's expecting company. Three means company already came.
